Designing VIP Tiers Your Top 5% Actually Want

Your best customers drive 35% of revenue. Build VIP tiers and perks that make them feel seen - and spend more.

Most tier ladders are built backwards. Someone picks three metal names, invents thresholds that sound impressive, attaches an extra percent off to the top one, and then wonders why nobody is climbing. A VIP tier is not a badge - it is a bet that a customer will change their buying behaviour to reach a benefit, which means the benefit has to be worth more to them than the effort is.

Designing VIP Tiers Your Best Customers Actually Want

Start from the customers you already have rather than from a template. Pull the spend distribution for the last year and find where it breaks: there is usually a visible gap between the people who bought once, the people who bought a handful of times, and a small group who buy on a rhythm. Those breaks are your thresholds. A tier boundary placed just above where a real cluster of customers already sits is a boundary people cross; one invented in a meeting is a boundary people ignore.

Then decide what the top tier is actually for. If your best customers already buy every six weeks without prompting, an extra discount just pays them for something they were going to do anyway. What they usually want is not a bigger cut - it is friction removed and status confirmed: free shipping that never has to be earned again, a better earn rate so their points build faster, and rewards that arrive without a code to remember.

Nobody chases a tier they cannot picture themselves reaching. Make the first rung look close and the top rung look worth it.

Make the Threshold Something You Can Defend

Each promotion step in MYLO is set from two conditions: a number of qualifying purchases, a lifetime qualifying spend, or both - and you choose whether the member needs to meet both or either one. The choice matters. Purchase count rewards frequency, which suits stores with a low average order value and a natural repeat cycle. Spend rewards basket size, which suits considered, higher-ticket purchases. "Either one" is the forgiving option that lets two different kinds of good customer arrive at the same tier. What never counts towards promotion is anything that is not a real purchase: manual adjustments, joining and birthday points, social follow rewards and balances migrated from an old platform are all excluded, so nobody is promoted by a gift.

Where Tier Ladders Go Wrong

  • The top tier is unreachable - if almost none of your existing customers would qualify today, the ladder has no visible traffic on it, and the tier comparison block on your storefront becomes a list of things other people get.
  • The perks are all discounts - three tiers offering 5%, 10% and 15% off is not a ladder, it is a sliding sale, and it trains your best customers to expect a bigger cut every time they come back.
  • Nothing changes on promotion day - if reaching Gold produces no coupon, no gift, no bonus points and no message, the member finds out by accident weeks later, and the moment you paid for is gone.

The fix for all three is the same: make the change tangible at the moment it happens. When a member crosses a threshold, MYLO promotes them immediately, fires the tier's upgrade rewards - coupon, gift, points - and sends the congratulations SMS or email. On Shopify their tier tag is updated on the customer record, and the tier's automatic club discount and free shipping start applying at checkout with nothing to type. That last part is what makes a tier feel like status rather than a coupon: the benefit is simply there.

Running the Ladder After Launch

Two things are worth watching in the first quarter. The first is tier distribution - if everyone is stuck in the entry tier, your first threshold is too high; if half your members reached the top in eight weeks, it was too low, and you can raise the bar for the next step without demoting anyone, since a member's tier and its start date are visible on their profile and you can move individuals by hand with a note when a judgement call is needed. The second is sales by loyalty level, which is on the dashboard next to the club's share of total revenue - that is the number that tells you whether the top tier is actually producing more, or just costing more.

Leave room above your best customers. A ladder where the strongest members have already finished has nothing left to offer them, and the automatic discount you gave them quietly becomes a permanent margin cut. Keep one rung ahead, make the benefits at each step feel different in kind rather than just larger in size, and let the promotion rules do the sorting. The point of a VIP tier is not to thank your top five percent for what they did last year. It is to make the customers just below them decide they want in.
